The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>&nbsp; is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes, and trends shaping the world. (Students can also investigate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/\">the main site<\/a>&nbsp;which includes longer stories.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">In a math class, resources featured on&nbsp;this site&nbsp;could be tied in to lessons on&nbsp;reading and interpreting data, using data to make decisions, representations of data, and describing data using benchmark fractions and percents. Connections could also be made to<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>social studies, current events, social justice, digital literacy, and culturally responsive teaching (CRT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>Sample math unit\/lesson<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Students can choose a story that they care about and share the findings with the class. Some questions&nbsp;they might investigate or report on could include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Why is this research is important to me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">How was the data was collected? <em>(Check out the expandable \u201chow we did this\u201d box in each story.)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">What stories do the graphs tell?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">What information is missing from the graphs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">What effect will learning about this research have on my day-to-day life and choices?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">What I can learn from the graphs? vs. what I can learn from the descriptions of the data?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Students may also conduct surveys of their peers or community members and compare their results with the results of the Pew studies.&nbsp;Students can then consider why their own results might be similar to or different from those reported at Pew Research Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default\"><strong>Supporting resources<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/empower\"><em>EMPower: Many Points Make a Point<\/em>&nbsp;book<\/a><\/strong>, especially lessons&nbsp;1\u20136, explore collecting data and creating and interpreting representations of data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/slowrevealgraphs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Slow Reveal Graphs website<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; A collection of graphs modified for use in a slow reveal graph routine (more information at the website), a routine that encourages students to look carefully at and think critically about representations of data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center&#8217;s Short Reads webpage<\/a>&nbsp;provides a range of&nbsp;short&nbsp;data stories that are current and relevant.
