Each set of materials for a topic includes a Teacher Guide and Student Packet; some include additional downloadable materials. For example, place value in two-digit numbers and addition and subtraction within 20 are contained in CCRSAE Level A. BeCALM does not address this foundational level. Our mission is to help adults and young adults understand how math is present and relevant in everyday life, and how they can use this knowledge to improve their lives and communities. Together with state and organizational partners we build capacity to offer high quality math instruction in adult learning centers, schools, community colleges, corrections education, and informal settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t    <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timing and Flexibility with BeCALM<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" id=\"accordion-1\"><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"headingfaq-759\">\n\t\t\t\t        <h5 class=\"mb-0\">\n\t\t\t\t          <button class=\"btn btn-link\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapsefaq-759\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapsefaq-759\">\n\t\t\t\t            Can I teach BeCALM in any order?\n\t\t\t\t          <\/button>\n\t\t\t\t        <\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <div id=\"collapsefaq-759\" class=\"collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"headingfaq-759\" data-parent=\"#accordion-1\">\n\t\t\t\t        <div class=\"card-body\"><p>The four number and operation sense titles are designed to build on each other sequentially. You make decisions about what to cover, and at what pace, depending on the students in your class.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t    <\/div><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"headingfaq-821\">\n\t\t\t\t        <h5 class=\"mb-0\">\n\t\t\t\t          <button class=\"btn btn-link\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapsefaq-821\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapsefaq-821\">\n\t\t\t\t            Why is it taking me longer to teach BeCALM than another curriculum?\n\t\t\t\t          <\/button>\n\t\t\t\t        <\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <div id=\"collapsefaq-821\" class=\"collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"headingfaq-821\" data-parent=\"#accordion-1\">\n\t\t\t\t        <div class=\"card-body\"><p>Building conceptual understanding takes time, and just because a math concept is \u201cfoundational\u201d doesn\u2019t mean that it is easy or quick to learn. Many beginning level math learners have had previous instruction in math that didn\u2019t work for them. It is also common for students at this level to have indicators of learning challenges and disabilities, whether they have a diagnosis or not. BeCALM is designed to give these learners an accessible, multi-sensory, conceptual learning experience so that they can be successful this time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t    <\/div><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"headingfaq-70\">\n\t\t\t\t        <h5 class=\"mb-0\">\n\t\t\t\t          <button class=\"btn btn-link\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapsefaq-70\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapsefaq-70\">\n\t\t\t\t            I\u2019ve been on one topic for a very long time. How do I know when to move on?\n\t\t\t\t          <\/button>\n\t\t\t\t        <\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <div id=\"collapsefaq-70\" class=\"collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"headingfaq-70\" data-parent=\"#accordion-1\">\n\t\t\t\t        <div class=\"card-body\"><ul>\n<li>Have students with good attendance achieved most of the goals?<\/li>\n<li>Are students independently using the new conceptual tools?<\/li>\n<li>Are the students or teacher weary of the topic?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a semester break or vacation coming up that would provide a natural time to start a new topic?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Answering yes to these questions means it may make sense to move on, even if the teacher has not completed every lesson in a BeCALM title. It is better to make a conscious decision to move on, rather than trying to rush through concepts or short-cutting by simply teaching procedures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t    <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classroom Variables<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" id=\"accordion-18\"><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"headingfaq-880\">\n\t\t\t\t        <h5 class=\"mb-0\">\n\t\t\t\t          <button class=\"btn btn-link\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapsefaq-880\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapsefaq-880\">\n\t\t\t\t            Can BeCALM work in a program with open enrollment?\n\t\t\t\t          <\/button>\n\t\t\t\t        <\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <div id=\"collapsefaq-880\" class=\"collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"headingfaq-880\" data-parent=\"#accordion-18\">\n\t\t\t\t        <div class=\"card-body\"><p>Any math curriculum will have better results with managed enrollment.\u00a0 The content in BeCALM is designed to repeat and cycle, which can help with irregular attendance and staggered start dates that are common in adult education.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t    <\/div><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"headingfaq-165\">\n\t\t\t\t        <h5 class=\"mb-0\">\n\t\t\t\t          <button class=\"btn btn-link\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapsefaq-165\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapsefaq-165\">\n\t\t\t\t            Will BeCALM work in a multilevel classroom?\n\t\t\t\t          <\/button>\n\t\t\t\t        <\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <div id=\"collapsefaq-165\" class=\"collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"headingfaq-165\" data-parent=\"#accordion-18\">\n\t\t\t\t        <div class=\"card-body\"><p>A well-designed curriculum and good teaching strategies can differentiate instruction for students within a span of a couple of grade levels, and accommodate for the different pace at which students learn.\u00a0 No curriculum is appropriate for all students.\u00a0 BeCALM is designed to accommodate students who need instruction in math at GLE 2-4 (CCRSAE B\/C); it will not meet the needs of students who are well outside of that range.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t    <\/div><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"headingfaq-148\">\n\t\t\t\t        <h5 class=\"mb-0\">\n\t\t\t\t          <button class=\"btn btn-link\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapsefaq-148\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapsefaq-148\">\n\t\t\t\t            Are there any students for whom BeCALM will not work?\n\t\t\t\t          <\/button>\n\t\t\t\t        <\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t      <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t      <div id=\"collapsefaq-148\" class=\"collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"headingfaq-148\" data-parent=\"#accordion-18\">\n\t\t\t\t        <div class=\"card-body\"><p>BeCALM is for adult math students at GLE 2-4. BeCALM is not for adult students at GLE K-1 \/ CCRSAE Level A, who need to develop beginning-level math skills, such as accurate methods for counting, an understanding of how numbers can be created with tens and ones, or single digit addition and subtraction. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doe.mass.edu\/acls\/frameworks\/policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACLS Curriculum and Instruction Policy<\/a>, there are two main requirements of mathematics curricula: CCRSAE alignment, and Digital Literacy integration and application.
