The National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) are hosting their annual conferences in Washington DC, September 22-25 (NCSM) and September 25-28 (NCTM). Hesitating, Revising, Backtracking: Essentials in Developing Mathematical Agency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presenters: <\/strong>Susan Jo Russell and Deborah Schifter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description:<\/strong>  How do we support teachers to listen\u2014really listen\u2014to elementary students’ mathematical explanations?  Through examining classroom video from grades 1-4, we will consider how teachers welcome hesitation, backtracking, and uncertainty as a necessary part of mathematical discourse. We will consider how teachers look for the mathematical sense in students\u2019 utterances and encourage persistence even when a student appears unsure or confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Student Reflection Tool For Building and Sustaining Equitable Math Learning Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presenters: Annie Sussman and Marta Garcia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description<\/strong>: This session explores a student reflection tool for gathering students\u2019 feedback about their experiences as math learners. We will investigate how this tool empowers students to take an active role in their own mathematical learning, nurturing their identities and offering opportunities to co-create their classroom environments. This tool also supports teachers in developing and sustaining equitable math learning communities that value and respect students\u2019 varied ideas, competencies, and contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questioning, Revising, Backtracking: Essentials of brilliance in Mathematical Argument<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description:<\/strong> How do we listen to students’ mathematical explanations? Do we privilege students who express their ideas in ways that are closest to what we recognize as correct or whose fluency of speech is more comfortable for us? Or do we welcome questioning and revision, even if we think the “right” answer has already been expressed? Video examples from grades 1-4 illustrate how teachers support students, even those who make errors or express uncertainty, to contribute to collective learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
