(1118) Interweaving Equitable Participation and Deep Mathematics: Collaboration to Support Student Agency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description:<\/strong> \u201cI have an idea, and my partners have ideas, and together we have one big idea.\u201d This third grader is naming an essential aspect of her mathematics class: a commitment to the development of collective mathematical agency (Aguirre et al., 2024). When classmates collaborate, they can dig deeply into complex mathematics\u2014noticing patterns and developing conjectures\u2014while coming to understand the value of each student\u2019s contributions to the building of challenging mathematical ideas.

Description:<\/strong> Small group work provides students opportunities to: collaborate, share ideas, and learn from others. How students participate and interact can impact their learning and mathematical identities. We will explore how coaches and teachers can support equitable participation in small group work through evidence-based reflection and asking students about their participation and by taking action based on what they learn. We will examine reflection tools and discuss examples of teachers and students engaging in reflective practices.
