In our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/mathequityforum\/what-do-your-students-think-about-math\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first blog<\/a>, <em>\u201cWhat Do Your Students Think About Math?: Student Reflection as a Tool for Finding Out\u201d<\/em> we offered an invitation to engage students in sharing their experiences and reactions to math class:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background:linear-gradient(135deg,rgb(210,248,212) 0%,rgb(210,248,212) 100%)\"><em>When we take time to listen and respond to the feedback students offer, we demonstrate our commitment to fostering a supportive learning community as well as our respect for our students\u2019 contributions. If used regularly, such reflections can help us see how students\u2019 thoughts about mathematics, and about themselves as learners, are changing over time (or not). This choice to pay attention to and respond to students\u2019 needs and current dispositions is a critical step in developing an equitable learning environment.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in learning more about how teachers can develop equitable math learning environments, our team sought input from teachers. We invited a group of elementary math teachers from diverse backgrounds and communities, to work with us on the development and field testing of a variety of Equity Resources. One such resource is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/mathequityforum\/terc_products\/getting-to-know-your-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Reflection Tool<\/a> which provides a bank of questions, and sample questionnaires and surveys, that teachers can use to learn more about their students&#8217; previous and current math experiences. The Tool is organized into four areas of reflection.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students\u2019 prior experiences with mathematics&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students\u2019 reflections on themselves as math learners&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students\u2019 beliefs about math and expectations for math class&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students\u2019 participation in math class&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/mathequityforum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2023\/10\/Emmanuel-300x197.jpeg\" alt=\"A 3rd grade teachers discusses a math problem with a student.\" class=\"wp-image-1888\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/mathequityforum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2023\/10\/Emmanuel-300x197.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/mathequityforum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2023\/10\/Emmanuel.jpeg 530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Teachers in the research group\u2014such as Berta, whose quote began this blog\u2014made student reflection an ongoing part of their practice. As they posed questions and collected responses, they found that reflecting on individual students\u2019 answers and on broader trends offered them fertile ground for analyzing their classroom community. Often these responses raised new questions they wanted to investigate and they did so in a variety of ways, by:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conducting an individual interview&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asking a follow up question&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Facilitating a whole class conversation&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working with a small group who may have exhibited the same needs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflecting on their practice&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Carmen asked her students to write a response to the question: <em>What do you do when something feels hard or challenging for you during math class? <\/em>She analyzed and then reflected on the responses:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" id=\"block-dba26ff6-52e1-492f-8738-cd0884907b4a\"><em>\u201cThe responses revealed that my students are feeling challenged and not wanting to share. Perhaps I will facilitate a discussion about what to do when you think something is hard.
