Native STEM Portraits Annotated Bibliography<\/strong><\/a> – This annotated bibliography includes references and summaries of literature, primarily literature on empirical research studies, that are focused on the experiences of Native people in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) higher education. The literature pieces were produced between 2005 and 2021 and are listed below alphabetically. This set of literature is not exhaustive, meaning it does not include all<\/em> literature that is written about Native people in STEM higher education. However, this document was curated to serve as a resource, as part of the Native STEM Portraits <\/em>Project (NSF-2000619), for scholars who are interested in Native undergraduate and graduate populations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AV巴士 STEM for All Video Showcase<\/strong><\/a> – This is an introductory video about the Native STEM Portraits <\/em>(NSP) Project, focused on our findings related to Native scientists\u2019 desire to give back to their communities and to contribute to Nation building through their STEM disciplines. We found that this plays a key role in motivating Native students and professionals to persist in STEM. Examples of giving back that we share in this video include teaching, creating safe spaces, mentoring, and serving as role models in their communities. As Nayenezgani, a geoscience student, said, \u201cMy mom started this fry bread stand out of a period of poverty. … And it reminds me that there\u2019s reason for me to be in science. I can make a success out of my struggles \u2026 and that is a reasoning why I am in science, is to help my community.\u201d We also share examples of Nation building from the study\u2019s data, including cultural preservation, such as translating science vocabulary into Native languages, and supporting technological sovereignty. As Lake, a biology student, stated, \u201cI want to start including Native terms into the lexicon of science so that people can refer to them and start adding a diverse tongue that isn\u2019t just Latin and English.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

STEM for All Multiplex October Expert Panel<\/strong><\/a> – This is a recording of a webinar on Indigenous ways of learning that was held on October 19, 2022, and features Dr. Nuria Jaumot-Pascual and Dr. Tiffany Smith representing the NSP Project. The event was hosted by the STEM for All Multiplex, a project funded by NSF from 2015 to August 31, 2023. The webinar highlights the processes involved in Indigenous ways of learning \u2014 learning by collaboration, making a difference\/giving back, intergenerational connection, responsibility, and respect. In the recording, three project teams that study learning and how to foster it in Indigenous communities discuss what can be learned from Indigenous ways of learning, for Indigenous peoples and the world at large. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portraits of Native Identity in Computer Science for Academic Persistence Presentation<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>– This is a recording of a presentation given by Dr. Nuria Jaumot-Pascual, Dr. Kathy DeerInWater, and Christina Silva in 2020 as part of AV巴士\u2019s Presenter Series. The presentation features the findings of the pilot study titled, Native Women and Two-Spirit Individuals in Computing Higher Education: A Photo Elicitation Study of Persistence<\/em> (NAWC2). NAWC2 was a one-year study funded by the Women of Color in Computing Collaborative (Kapor Center\/Center for Gender Equity in Science and Technology, ASU). The study used photo elicitation to understand the experiences of Native women and two-spirit individuals\u2019 persistence in computer science and how their identities intersect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
