Doing the Math with Families

Empowering Families as Leaders in Math LearningDoing Math with Families is a high-quality mathematics professional development (PD) program adapted from our successful NSF-funded Doing the Math with Paraeducators project. The program is designed for families and caregivers who want to support their children鈥檚 math learning and contribute to their school communities by leading family math events, facilitating parent workshops, mentoring other parents, and in some cases beginning a pathway toward becoming early childhood educators.
Workshop Delivery and FacilitationLast summer, the program brought together six family members for weekly two-hour sessions to explore math games and activities that support children鈥檚 mathematical thinking at home. Sessions were co-facilitated by bilingual educators who had previously participated in the Doing the Math paraeducator training, giving them opportunities to further develop their leadership and teaching skills while mentoring families. Each week, families received short math videos and shared anonymous feedback through WhatsApp surveys, helping facilitators continuously improve the workshops.
This winter, the program facilitated three family math workshops for parents participating in the St. Stephen鈥檚 Youth Parent Mentor Program. The participating parents represented five different Boston Public Schools and engaged in activities designed to strengthen their ability to support children鈥檚 mathematical learning and share these strategies within their school communities.
